Surface wave dispersion measurements depend on body waves in the near surface. These waves are frequency dispersive, and travel at velocities very similar to shear waves. By measuring surface waves and analyzing their frequency changes, a model of subsurface shear waves can be developed. This is an especially important property to measure on engineering geophysical survey sites.
